Charcoal Cannister Removal

Cannister- 2007 Remove and now Rough Idle

Just took the Cannister off to make room for Ohlins.

Went for a ride this evening and the idle is VERY rough- like it wants to shut down. Idle is about 1100. It also seems to "back-fire" POP a little more when I shut the throttle down.

Seems to run fine above idle.

I followed the steps posted on here to plug the two 1/4" ports and the vacuum port on the left TB. I extended the "breather" hose back down under the frame with a 3/16" hose which fits the hose coming from the front.

I don't think the tank is sucking to vacuum and we rode about 25 miles, so I think my vent line is open..

Do I need to rebalance the TB?????

I am pretty sure I don't have an air leak..?

David, I was hoping someone else would jump in, someone who may have encountered the same problem.

I removed the canister just the same method on mine. I do not have any issue, and I can not imagine how the removal would have the effects you are describing - unless your work created a vacuum leak somewhere, e.g. plugging a port.

Unless the charcoal cannister removal is the cause of the problem, the warranty is not denied. In principal it functions like this: should the engine die on starvation and there is a non approved air filter, BMW may refer you to the filter maker.

How the absent charcoal cannister could cause a damage, I am not aware of anything. A faulty job done when removing is of course another matter.

The '08 tank has a separate compartment on the right side, which accommodates the evaporation canister. If the US models have one, I don't know. (Nice free space if you don't have one!)

My '07 had one, it is the Californistan model.

Peter has it right, the charcoal canister on the '08 is located on the inner face of the right-hand fuel lobe, as indicated in his photograph (which shows the space usually occupied by the canister--obviously in his case the canister has been removed. And it can be a very useful space, it's where the compressor for my Stebel horn resides on my '08GSA.

By the way, in Peter's photo you can see two threaded inserts in the tank, one on each side of the cubby. These are very useful for holding in place anything you install in the cubby, but be VERY careful in tightening on these, the inserts will spin VERY easily in the fuel lobe.

I previously posted a detailed thread on removing the charcoal canister and installing a Stebel horn on my '08 GSA on the advrider site, at: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=386336
