Throttle Body Sych>>>TwinMax Saves the day

Not sure how many here do their own Maintenance on their bikes. I am 150 miles from nearest dealer so I started doing my own maintenance. In addition to setting valves, I purchased a TwinMax from A&S BMW to keep my throttlebodies synched. On recent trip, my GSA had major increase in fuel consumption and started backfiring when letting off the fuel. Motor in general was running rough, about 2600 miles since last service. Most of the ride had been in the dirt. I carry a tool kit on the bike including my Twinmax. After hooking up the Twinmax I learned that one of the throttle adjustment nuts had vibrated loose and had me way out of synch. I reset the the throttle bodies and it was an immediate improvement. The Twinmax is simple to use and accurate. I checked my synch against a manometer later and a dead match. If you do your own work or plan to the Twinmax is a great tool to have

Without the BMW diagnosis computer you are more ore less only adjusting the throttle cables, I believe.

True enough but getting them adjusted right makes a big difference in how they perform. I plan on buying a GS911 next to read and clear codes.

Tuning

I like mercury sticks best still. I seem to be able to "see" them better and a better feel for what's going on.

Seems that on the boxer, everything has to be happy or else. With the TB sync, I do it at about 4300 RPM so the bike runs smoothest at the speed I typically ride.

On my Vstrom I had built a homemade device using ATF fluid and a yard stick to measure. This is just alot easier and works well even when going down the road. I set mine at 4000 RPM but check above that and minmal difference... 8-)

Here's some rather detailed instructions how to make your own manometer:
http://obairlann.net/reaper/motorcycle/manometer.html

Only problem, is that this guy uses water in it. Methinks that's a bad idea ?-( Better to use some sort of heavy oil, that way if some inadvertently gets into the carbs it won't be too big a problem...

Cheers,

Thats why I used transmission fluid...does not damage the engine if you oops :twink: Plus it is RED and shows up well against my yardstick...trust me...the Twinmax is much more convenient and no mess if you drop a tube...lol

A mercury manometer is the best means for determining TB balance. As you say, you can easily visualize what takes place as you adjust various settings.

It is interesting that you used the manometer to verify your Twinmax. I use the manometer inasmuch as it is a primary device...no calibration needed.
