Machine working great!

At 30,000 miles (48.300 kms) my 2007 R1200GS runs perfectly. Uses no oil, gets good fuel economy and has no problems. There were a few issues with the way the engine was initially setup, the valves on the left cylinder were set to no clearance. The dealer never resolved things, I identified the problem and fixed it myself.

Two recalls: one on the brake lines and one on the EWS antenna ring. Both handled well by the warranty. Initially my fuel gauge didn't work properly but the dealership replaced the sensor strip and all is well now.

At the 600 mile (1000 km) check, the mechanic set the rebound on the rear shock to the middle of the range which made the machine handle poorly. That was resolved when I replaced the factory suspension with Elka Suspension (from Canada).

Other than a few harshly handled issues by the mechanics at my local dealership, my bike has performed wonderfully and works well. I've replaces the tires several times which is expected. I perform maintenance on a handful of these machines for friends and the machines have always been easy to work on and no major issues or problems have occured.

Overall I'm happy with this machine and expect to wear it out before I replace it, that should take another 10 years or so...

I am at 10,000 miles now, doing all my own maintenance since the 600. Bought a HF tire changer so I am doing my own tires now...I love my bike...seems like I am getting more and more work though...2 other friends of mine now bring their BMWs to me 8-)

working great - update

Here is a quick update. My 2007 GS now has 60,000 miles and is still without problems. It's a great machine, not perfect in all ways but my favorite bike so far! My plans are to continue riding this machine till one of us dies.

Thanks for the update Stefan. Always nice to hear something positive among all these complaints in other forums.

My GS did have some issues, all the usual (well known) stuff, like early died battery, fried fuel pump controller, ring antenna without reception. While it puzzles me why BMW is not able to eliminate these (primitive) issues, I myself am satisfied as well with my GS. Ok the ring antenna finally seems is fixed after 4 years. The most important thing for me is, that I do never get stranded in the middle between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, or similar. In Asia help is not just a credit card away.

I am craving for a long ride, but I have a small package to care for

Please let us hear from you from time to time!
