Top Box Mounted fuel tank???

We have quite a healthy number of motorcycle riders here at my work. So I see a good number of different bike set ups. But this really caught my eye.

Little brass ball valve mounted on the right side frame.

Thats my GSA next to his V-storm.

It's an extra fuel tank bolted on a suzuki vstorm 1000 where the top box goes. It looks like it could be an extra five gallons. on a side note he has the Jesse luggage side boxes. Very very nice. Heres the link: http://www.jesseluggage.com/suzuki.html

Thanks fir posting, spacemec!

It seems North Americas is the onlky area in the world were extra fuel cells are used? Isn't it dangerous?

This is the first one I’ve ever seen. I don’t know if it’s dangerous or not. It seemed very heavily built, thick steel, brass fittings and valves.
I wouldn’t use one because I like to get off the bike every three hours or so, just for my bum’s sake. And you can tell your ride-with, “you need fuel”. This thing would blow your cover story!! LOL :chuckle:

Although the aux. tank seems nicely done with great workmanship, I just don't get it! Unless you're riding the Iron Butt or some other endurance rally, what's the use? When I did the Labrador Highway on a DL650 a few years ago, I purchased a 10-liter plastic Jerrycan at an auto-parts store in Baie-Comeau before heading out into the "wilderness", then gave it away at a service station in Happy-Valley. All I had to do was bungee-it onto the back of my topcase. It did come in handy once, about 65km before then next gas station!

Having a permanently mounted aux. fuel tank on the luggage rack means alot of extra sprung weight, carried high and back on the bike... it must really screw-up the center of gravity. I've seen a few guys around town which look like they've raided the TouraTech catalog and added every long-distance accessory they could find. However, when you check their mileage it's usually less than 10,000km per year :chuckle: Oh well... at least they look adventurous!

Cheers,
Lucky

Funny you should mention “Iron Butt”. There is an Iron Butt sticker on the bike. I didn’t know anything about Iron Butt rallies. I’ve done a little research on it and that must be what he’s in to.

We have a lot of distance between stops around here...here is my answer to extending the range on my ATK...

I did not want to spend the money for a RotoPax setup...so here is the Briggs and Stratton el cheapo but works method...gives me an extra 30 miles or so in hard riding conditions 8-)

Lucky, I do 1000 mile days but I am not an Iron Butt member. I have several friends that are and most that compete in the rallies carry extra fuel. I think they are limited to 10 gallons max, so they build custom tanks to give the max range under IBA regulations. These guys eat and drink on the go, some even go on the go :chuckle: It is not uncommon for me to go 400 miles and not put a foot down if I am on a long trip trying to make time. The tanks are usually used first so they pull the weight down as quick as possible. These guys are not bothered by that little weight...
