What are the best settings for the OEM suspenion?

For the R 1200 GS with Showa suspension (= model year from 2006) try this as a starting point:

REAR
Preload: 9 clicks open, counted from full preload
Rebound dampening: 2 turns from closed (C)

FRONT
2. position open, counted from full preload

The mechanic at my local dealer changed the settings on my factory
suspension during the 600 mile run-in checks. He set everything
to the middle of the adjustment range. This resulted in horrible
handling with the rear suspension turning into a pogo stick. I
was on a trip and made some adjustments to get better performance and
never returned to this issue till recently.

After reading Peter's settings, I adjusted everything to what is
recommended. Initial impression is better than what I had.
My only riding experience after making these changes was a short test
ride. Previously I had the Hydraulic preload about 4 clicks from
fully hard and the rebound one turn from hard. That was not ideal
but better than what the dealership did.

I'm still exploring the option of replacing my shocks with aftermarket
stuff, I need to let my bank account heal a little more. I've
looked at several brands of suspension but not made a final decision.
Enjoy life, lower your standards.

Thanks for your feed-back, Stefan!

With your relatively heavy Safari luggage you may want to modify a little. E.g. rebound dampening 1.5 - 1 3/4 turns from close and preload 8 turn from fully hard. Front can stay the same.
