SW-Motech crash bars

Cant get it to fit on the bike!

It seems as it sits to low so I cant get the two bolts under the engine in.

Actually, I can get the largest one in (gear side), but it seems that the gap is to wide to get it together. The small one in (brake side) cant I get to enter the threads.

Not much I can have done wrong, so I'm quite stuck here...

RE: SW-Motech crash bar

Installation was easy for me. Try following the order on the pics, as I have taken them. And also, first do not tighten any bolt, let them loose. I hope this helps.

Package content:

Steps:

Now tighten all bolts.

Tools used:
- torx bits 30 & 55
- bits metric 10 & 13
- allen key 4 & 5
- spanner metric 13
- extension
- Loctite
A driver for the bits and a torque wrench are not pictured.

Installation done:

I decided to give it another try. Started with the connection bar under the engine. Small bolt in all the way, big bolt in ~60%.

Mounted brake side bar, it went on quite easy. Tightened the small upper bolt ~90% and the rest ~50%.

Mounted gear side bar, a bit struggle. I had to pull the bar down hard to get the small upper bolt in.

Tightened the small upper bolt ~90% and the rest ~50%.

Mounted the upper cross bar, tightened the bolt under the engine 100%, tightened the bolt big engine bolts 100% and the rest 100%.

I guess I have to instruct the guys at my dealer, if not I guess I have to pay for it if they struggle as much as I did this morning.

Good, at least they are on now. They anyway need to be of the way only for the valves checking, not too often.

New version of the SW-Moetch crash bar

The SW-Moetch crash bars have been updated. First the version 3 (more pictures in the posts above). It has a connector bar running below the engine pan. For performing oil changes this bar has to be removed. Ground clearance is somewhat affected as well.

The version 4 does away with the connector bar. Note the side bar is now cut more snug around the valve cover.

sw-motech crash bars

I installed two sets of version 3 bars for friends. Having the strap run under the engine is a major disappointment to me. The strap needs to be removed for each oil change and the bars need to be removed to check the valves. When I purchased bars for my own GS, I chose HB bars and have been happy since. I haven't seen the version 4 bars yet, maybe they will be a major improvement.

Don't understand. V3 should not need removal for valve cover access. V4 disposes with the strap.

Torque Setting Used

Good Morning,
Were the torque setting from the install doc used? Or did you use what was from the manual? The instructions seem to have more torque than that of the manual. I bought the older style with the crossbar last year and now finally getting around to getting them on.

Thanks,
Ron

SW-Motech Crash Bar Torques Used

Peter,
No worries. I just finished putting them on. I had to search the DVD manual for the torques.
Rear Frame to Engine Lower - 55 Nm (BWM DVD Manual)
Crash Bar(Bash Plate) to Engine, Front Right - 8 Nm (BMW DVD Manual)
Crash Bar(Bash Plate) to Engine, Front Left - 19 Nm (BMW DVD Manaul)
SW-Motech Cross-member(s) Bolts - 19 Nm (SW-Motech Tech Sheet called for 23 Nm)
Upper M6 Machine Screw (Ones that feed through the rubber grommets)?? - 10 Nm (SW-Motech Tech Sheet called for 9.6 Nm)

I think that covers them all. I will be riding to work tomorrow so we will see how I did.

Regards,
Ron
