Removing the center stand

Has anyone experience with engine oil leaking slowly into the left cylinder, when the GS is parked on the side stand?

I was thinking of removing my center stand. I don't really have use for it, unless there are disadvantages I don't know about.

well i have heard that Beemer engines usually consume oil, anf you have to have the bike upright to start it. not on it's side stand. i think this oil penetration issue is true.

Thanks Vanco!

Mine uses about 0.15 l / 1000 km, sometimes less. I guess I better get used to having a center stand ?(

RE: Removing the center stand

Big advantage of the center stand is servicing the bike.

Also, if you have a flat, you can work on the tires better.

Lastly, it takes up less room in the garage when on the center stand.

Center stand removed

ooops I did it. I had parked the bike now for weeks on the side stand, hot and cold. Didn't notice any oil sipping away.

When I had it in my hands I thought this is not that heavy. I weighted it with exactly 3 kg.

I got my center stand legs 20 mm shortened. This is the height my Wilbers and WP suspension is altered. I paid S$ 60 / US$ 42 / Euro 28 for this job. The price includes cutting, fabricating two inner tubes for enforcement of the legs, welding, and touching up with paint. I will mount the center stand back whenever I will need it, e.g. for bike service.

Installed, and could not be any better! It is taken on and off in minutes, I do not need a separate rear wheel stand. I wonder why I did not do this before.

Great job, William!

Hi Peter,
due to the nature of my customized GS, I don't have a center stand as well.
However, to have it standing upright for servicing, loading for trips and to reduce space consumption when parked in my garage, I use a front wheel stand. It is sold by Rennkuh.de for 160€ and works like a charm.
When comimg back from a trip I just drive into it and jump off the bike.
It is as well great when transporting the bike in a van or on a trailer, as it eliminates the need for a rail . I just put the stand in the van, push the bike in and fix it with belts.

I just have a picture with the bike at hand. I am going to post some pictures of the stand alone tonight.
Regards
Frank
