Ring Antenna Failures

Some GS'ers reported the ring antenna getting broken. It is not clear to me how this part can get broken, but there we go. Should this happen it is impossible starting the bike. Possibly this even happens on a week-end! We know Murphy. I plan to carry a spare ring antenna along in my luggage.

Part no. 61 35 7 696 463 , about US$ 160 / Euro 100.

Open the black plastic cover in front of the antenna by undoing the two torx screws. Then release the small connector. Place the key into the key hole, and hold the spare antenna close to the key fob, above. The cable is just long enough. The GS will start.

For calming down the masses, BMW also lowered the price of the ring antenna. 61 35 7 705 247 costs now Euro 60 ~ US$ 93.

Some people are passing tips around how to mobilize a BMW which is immobilized by a faulty ring antenna. The first runner ups in Germany are:

1. Remove the ignition key, and turn the handle bar a few times from left to right an vice versa. Try again.
2. Remove the key and remove yourself fom near the motorcycle - few meters is good enough. Try again after about 15 minutes.
3. Disconnect the battery for five minutes. Try again.

Any other ideas?

More details on how BMW handles the process in Europe:

- On the next workshop visit the version of the ring antenna will be checked, and eventually there will be an exchange
- Owners of BMW motorcycles from build year 2007 will receive a separate letter asking to visit their workshops for free exchange

I think BMW needs to return them to the manufacturer. But strange, that your 247 is replaced.

ring antenna replaced

My local dealer replaced the ring antenna on my 2007 GS. They said sales were so good on the GS and BMW received faulty parts from a supplier with the increased production levels. The potentially faulty ring antennas were replaced. Contributing factors to a failure were high humidity or lots of rain. No faults were ever received on my bike but the antenna was replaced just the same. My dealer claimed the process takes about 3 to 4 hours and BMW pays the dealers 3/4 hour labor.
Enjoy life, lower your standards.

I think it can be done by a professional in 30 minutes. 60 minutes for me.

The current exchange program has technically nothing to do with the previous problems. They want to solve the ring antenna issues now once for all. The antennas are from Belgium, made by a new supplier.

Ring antenna 61 35 7 705 247 works

The ring antenna theme seems to be solved with the 247. No more failure reports from the German side at least.

Here is a trick that has worked for a couple of guys:
4. Press the starter button at the same time when switching ignition on.

Here, you can visualize the connector diagram. If somebody interested I actually followed the wires up to the computer.

Peuco, now ... what can I do with this diagram? Install an engage / disengage switch? Remote control? Auto-self destruction?
