LED Rearlights

BMW LED rear light, to obtain as an accessory

For comparison reason, the original R 12 GS tail light

This one is from Nippy Normans , costs BP 79 / US$ 160 / Euro 115. Does not require a software update.

I have an LED taillight that came on my biek when I got it. Piece of junk. It stays on as a brake light and never goes out. The only way to fix it was to disconnect one of the two power wires. Now it operates as a proper taillight but the dash says I have a bulb out. Grrr. It looks like the one from Touratech. Sadly I didn't get the stock one with the bike.

At the moment the BMW LED unit is redrawn from the BMW list. I have the simple version of the above from Nippy Normans. I will write something tomorrow to it.

LED tail light, bought from Nippy Normans inclusive white lens for BP 75 / US$ 152 / Euro 108. I chose the normal version, not the so called the 'Design' version as shown on the animated picture from above. The difference is in the pattern how the leds are lit up. On the normal version they don't light up in decorative stripe-design.

The kit includes a circuit board wit pigtail plug

and a white lens. The lens of course looks nice on the bike:

Installation is a 5 Minutes affair, simply done by removing the original lens cover, plugging the pigtail in, and securing the circuit board with a screw:

Interesting - pinkish light instead of the expected intensive LED red:

This of course also does not get better with the clear lens:

... which is why I reverted to the red lens:

Much better, even in daylight:

Conclusion:

Installation is simple. The plug fit to the lamps socket is pretty loose. I had to use some tape for getting this sitting firm, and the light firing up. Without the tape the light would not work, and an error message is displayed. The LEDs have a rather pinkish red that looks Hello Kitty style with the clear lens. The light output is almost invisible under bright sun light! The light output is vastly improved with the original red lens.

As a replacement rear light unit with no more burning out bulb, this unit works with the Canbus system. The light panel alone costs BP 55. But don't expect any visibility improvement over the stock tail light.

Wunderlich Led tail light for Euro 56 / US$ 83.

Pic is taken on a muddy rainy day, not even under sunshine. Brake light is in operation. Look at the light colour temperature and brightness. Hyperlight included for comparison.

Conclusion
Looks are not everything, safety is first. I did not bother installing it.

Here is the original BMW Led rear light in action

I think this needs hardly any further explaining comment. Everything else I saw is crappity crap against that one.

Louis LED rearlight, 2 W, with red tinted reflector, Euro 40, Art.-No. 10033679 , http://tinyurl.com/22q8rm

The red reflector seems to do it. To get the Canbus system not complaining, add a 82 Ohm/ 4 W resistor for the tail light, and for the brake light a 56 Ohm 6 W resistor, each in parallel. These resistors get very hot. Don't pack them in heat insulating material.

Update 09-Jul: Buyers commented the brake light is barely visible!

LED taillight

Peter,
I asked BMW of Daytona [while at bike week] if the 08 LED would work on the 07 and they said no.

Do you have the Part Number?

Price?

thanks.

The rear side of the BMW '08 LED tail light

The '08 LED tail light costs in Germany Euro 190 / US$ 295, a horrendous price I think. BMW Germany has this light as a kit for installation to earlier models. It comes together with an adapter cable to plug it right into the existing socket. If that is the part no. on the housing, I don't know. It is assumed the models from '07 do not need registering of the LED light, might be wrong. Earlier models do. Without registering it still can be connected via parallel resistors 22 Ohm 10 W for the riding light, and 180 Ohm 3 W for the brake light.

One big difference between BMW OEM LED and the others is that the BMW seems to use the much stronger Luxeon leds, which are square, the cheaper ones uses standard strong led's, which are round, there is a very big difference in light output between them.
