It's confirmed, a new Zumo on the way...

Interesting. But it seems to be little more than a Nuvi with updated software and water resistant casing. Not sure that makes it a true designed-for-the-motorcyclist GPS like the other Zumo series. Wondering how easy it would be to operate with gloves on?

Cheers,
Lucky

Just checked the Garmin website and I was disappointed to see that the entry-level Zumo line is no longer available. Very unfortunate, as I don't really need XM radio and bluetooth compatibility. Cheapest option now seems to be the Zumo 550, but at $900USD, I'd hardly consider it affordable. Not a smart move by Garmin, IMHO. You can get a Magellan Crossover for about $400CAD, a Lowrance XOG for $260CAD, and a TomTom Rider 2 for $700CAD (includes Scala Rider bluetooth headset & RAM Mounting Kit).

Sure, the Zumo series has a few more bells and whistles, but the bottom line is that the other units are quite capable of doing the job for less money. And more money in my pocket means more roadtrips!

Cheers,
Lucky

GPS

I'm still pretty happy with my old 276c. It's starting to show some age, but works great. Every now and then, it gets lost- like several places in western North Carolina and Florence Italy. Just turn it off- wait a while and it seems to recover.

I still would like the nice ones to be in the <$500 range. Hard to part with $800+

Same here... still love my Quest. Hope it keeps working, 'cause I can't afford to replace it!

I have 2 Garmin 60CSXs...2 gig cards in both...Topo 2008 north America. Lots of details, especially for off roaders. Been using for almost 2 years and no problems. Got a RAM mount on my GSA...Dash mount in my truck and boat...

<Rant on>: I'm a bit irritated that Garmin seems to release more and more dumb gps units, they are moving away from advanced configurable units to idiotically simplified units, if it weren't for Map Source I probably would have switched years ago (to what, I don't know), is it to keep customer support on a low level or why? Give us more, not less! <Rant off>.

Seriously, come on Garmin, is it so hard to have two levels of configuration, like Standard and Advanced, the hardware is great, but software is really getting behind.

I will buy the 660 anyway, since it has things I'll probably like, like A2DP and so on... and as I sold my Zumo 550 as soon as the rumors about the 660 was confirmed, I know, I'm a gadget guy...

My biggest gripe with Garmin is that they do not update their maps thoroughly!!!....I have Topo 2008 North America. I find that many recent road changes have not been updated and often in rural areas it tracks besides the road, not on it!!! The Road I live on is listed as a county road and dirt, in reality it was paved and renamed in 1968 ?-( WTF 30 YEARS SHOULD BE ENOUGH TIME TO UPDATE! Sorry to Rant but that is my pet peive with Garmin!!! :wall:

?( In my opinion, MapSource is probably one of the most counter-intuitive mapping/routing applications out there! Not to mention that it's as buggy as a beta. The "Find" tool is rudimentary at best, when searching for something you better know the exact name - if not you won't find it. Seriously, how hard would it be to incorporate a simple parser into the Find tool? Some of my other pet peeves are just basic UI issues. Like using the scroll wheel on a mouse should zoom in and out (as it does with MS Streets & Trips, or Google Earth, or MapInfo, etc.), but no, in MapSource it goes North or South. IMHO, MS Streets & Trips is much better for route planning - and at $39 it's cheap. Only problem is it doesn't transfer waypoints to the GPS, and starting with version 2009, you can't convert the .est files to another format with GPS Babel - seems Micro$oft has gone proprietary :O

Have you told them? Seriously, most of the data used by Garmin is received through various government databases, and we all know how good the government can be at updating info :chuckle: I had a similar issue with some roads simply not existing in CitySelect 7.0 (these were newer bypasses that had been built about 5 - 6 years ago). So I sent Garmin Support an email and lo and behold, in the new version of CitySelect the road it there. By the way, I'll give credit when due - Garmin's support is pretty good. Every time I've emailed them with an issue, they've responded within 24 hours.

Cheers,
Lucky
