Rear Hugger

Ilmberger carbon rear hugger, costs S$ 513 / Euro 255 / US$ 333.

Rear passenger legs are much less muddy, and the shock is better protected, too.

Conclusion
+ weights close to nothing
+ easy installation
+ looks great
+ works great
- costs a bomb

Inner fender for R 1200 GS / GSA

Wunderlich has a new fender part, which seems useful to me. It is advertised to reduce dirt flinging around from the open rear frame area. Google translation straight from the Wunderlich website:

" Who was not already annoyed. The free framework triangle of 12 GS models does not offer protection from splash-water and the dirt whirled up. The water hurls unhindered over the boots and up to the thighs. Substantial dirt exposure of driver and pillion are the result. Plus, the dirt arrives into the most remote corners under the seat, and labouros cleaning is required thereafter. Our interior fender eliminates this problem in an impressing way. Inconspicuously it integrates into the bikes design. It fills the gap in the otherwise open framework triangle, and provides a uniformity to the framework concept. "

This part is made from ABS plastic, cost is Euro 130 / US$ 200.

Installed:

It seems this offers the most effective protection for the shock and battery I have seen so far. Now someone just need to come up with a neater fixing method, instead of the cable ties.

Inner fender liner

When I installed Elka suspension on my 2007 GS, there was nothing to protect the rear shock from wheel spray. While the Wunderlich liner is expensive, it fits well and protects the shaft on the shock. I had to make a minor notch in the liner to fit around the mount for my Jesse Safari bags. My local climate is rather dry and I haven't experienced riding in the rain yet. In ADVRider, another alternative has recently been listed that costs almost as much.

In retrospect, I could have tried making something myself, however this fits well and does the job - just expensive.
Enjoy life, lower your standards.

We pay for convenience, but I agree that it is somewhat overpriced. Probably you know the excellent description on r1200gs.info http://www.r1200gs.info/howto/mudflap.html .

Just an update one year later. It looks absolutely fragile, but it held up well so far. Even the gravel roads in Australia could not harm it.

Mud Guard

Nice Hugger/Mud Guard...
http://www.cyclenutz.com/products/brand_…o_mudsling.html

Price per Unit (piece): $159.00

MudSling is designed to deflect mud, water, and rocks, kicked up by a spinning rear tire, away from your suspension and battery to protect and keep them cleaner.

MudSling is the much needed, and best selling rear fender that keeps rain, mud and rocks from making a mess of your shock, ESA body, and battery.

If you've bought an aftermarket shock for your GS you'll definately want to add the Mudsling to help protect your investment.

  • High impact ABS plastic
  • Matte Black Finish
  • Easy mounting with 2 screws and 4 zip ties

I am sure they both do the job, but the Mudsling looks a bit slicker. Did you get one?

fender peotector from Wunderlich.

?-( I tried one on my 2009 gs with ESA and did not like how it rubbed on the ESA tube on bottom of rear shock. I send it back thinking it could damage ESA .

Maier rear inner fender.

Just installed this Maier inner rear fender. Fits great, looks good. I had a little trouble lining up the screws that go up to the frame under the seat. But when I held my tongue in the right position they went right in.

Seriously, this is a well made product that fits good.
