User Reports: Michelin Anakee

Front Anakee new
- average thread depth is 5.1 mm
- minimum thread depth is 4.5 mm

Rear Anakee new
- average thread depth is 7.7 mm
- minimum thread depth is 7.3 mm

Measuring the Anakee is difficult. I can't remember any of my tires before which had such a huge variation of thread depth.

The Anakees steers in easy into corners, and stays neutral in curves and on straights. Compared the Tourance feels a little bit more solid from the front. They are both not worlds apart, with the Tourance being a bit more touring oriented and comfortable-compliant, and the Anakee behaving more crisp and sportive. All in all the Anakee is a good tire with excellent wet grip, straight and in corners.

Now my niggle corner:
Nobody mentioned so far, that the Anakee has the same flaw as the Pilot Road 'Trail': It is slippery on road markings, wet concrete, and generally everything that is painted. This is probably not a major issue, but if you don't know you might get a nice shock occasionally. Secondly, it appears strange to me, that the Michelin Pilot Road 'Trail' (the version which is sold in EU) being a 100% road tire has more thread than the Michelin Anakee. Motorcycle tire making seems to be a business with big profit but very little logic.

RE: Michelin Anakee User Reports

10,000 km / 6200 miles intermediate update:

Front Anakee new / 10,000 km
- average thread depth is 5.1 / 4.2 mm
- minimum thread depth is 4.5 / 3.8 mm
- no relevant cupping
- performance of the front has not changed or degraded from new

Rear Anakee new / 10,000 km
- average thread depth is 7.7 / 5.2 mm
- minimum thread depth is 7.3 / 4.9 mm
- no cupping
- good performance has not changed at all

Therefore, I expect the Anakee to last ~ 20,000 km / 13,000 miles for the rear, and about 27,000 km 16,500 m for the front, before I take them off at around 2.5 mm remaining thread.

15,000 km / 9,300 miles intermediate update:

Front Anakee new / 10,000 km / 15,000 km
- average thread depth is 5.1 / 4.2 mm / 3.5 mm
- minimum thread depth is 4.5 / 3.8 mm / 3.2 mm

Not the cupping that I know, but some middle blocks sloop downwards, which causes some rushing noise audible at lower speeds. Overall he tire wear looks appropriate for the mileage.

Rear Anakee new / 10,000 km / 15,000 km
- average thread depth is 7.7 / 5.2 mm / 3.7 mm
- minimum thread depth is 7.3 / 4.9 mm / 3.3 mm

There is no cupping and the tire wear looks excellent.

General Comment: In tight corners the GS has now a slight tendency to fall into the curve, for a brief moment when I steer her in. Otherwise the performance overall is still unchanged, which means good!

My 2007 R1200GS came with Michelin Anakee tires. They performed
well, better than the set I ran on my VStrom. These were recently
replaced at 14000 km (8750 miles), about 3 months worth of wear.
No measurements were taken, however the wear bars were showing on the
rear tire and the front showed significant cupping. Anakee is not
my favorite tire, my experience is they tend to create a lot of noise
as they wear. Wet weather performance was excellent even at the
end of the tread life. Other than the minor inconvenience with howling, I have no major complaints with Michelin Anakee.

The new Metzler Tourance EXP's were mounted. I'll try keeping
track of wear verses distance traveled and present a graph of the
results. This should take another 6 months as we are nearing the
end of the summer and my travel plans will be fewer through the fall
and winter months. I'm often leary of tire reports on newly
mounted tires. All new tires feel better than the worn ones
recently removed. The Tourance EXP mounted well and balanced
easily.
Enjoy life, lower your standards.

Tires

My 07 came in with the Battle Wings.

So far I like them. They seem quieter and smoother than the Tourance. On hard pack and gravel, they seem equal to the Tourance on my 02 GSA. I realize that the 07 weighs less and carries it's weight lower.

Haven't tried the Anakee.

Total mileage of my GS: 21,212 km / 13,180 miles

Front Anakee: new / 10,000 km / 15,000 km / 21,000 km
- average thread depth: 5.1 mm / 4.2 mm / 3.5 mm / 3.1 mm
- minimum thread depth: 4.5 mm / 3.8 mm / 3.2 mm / 2.7 mm

The front shows cupping and the tire has fine cracks around the profile blocks.

Rear Anakee: new / 10,000 km / 15,000 km / 21,000 km
- average thread depth: 7.7 mm / 5.2 mm / 3.7 mm / 2.5 mm
- minimum thread depth: 7.3 mm / 4.9 mm / 3.3 mm / 2.2 mm

There is no cupping and the tire's wear pattern looks excellent still at high mileage.

General Comment:

At 15,000 km the Anakee had a slight tendency to drop into tighter corners. This tendency is now stronger. The high speed stability and the ability to stay solid on the track when cornering is not anymore what it used to be when the Anakee was newer. It tries to upset the chassis by resisting inclination, and requires harder steering input to hold the intended direction.

I love the rear, one of the better I had. The front Anakee is not that good. To my opinion it falls behind the rear. It does not run very compliant, and also I think it does not have the grip of the rear.

Knowing that some would squeeze out more miles, to me this tire is now worn. Considering a mileage of 21,212 km I am satisfied. They know how to make tires in Europe.
