2008 version of the R 1200 GS

The rumour mill: By the 4. quarter of this year BMW will be coming out with an updated version of the R 1200 GS. It is expected the engine develops 110 hp.

F 800 GS: That this new model will be launched is actually quite sure already. Experience would suggest the introduction date being around September, at one of the big motorcycle shows.

The upgraded R 1200 GS would make sense in hindsight that it would create a clearer gap to the F 800 GS, and at the same time BMW would strengthen the position against the new Tiger 1050.

Some addition to the rumour mill talk about redesigned beak, screen and seat, stainless steel side covers, different upper triple clamps, rider foot pegs same as the R 12 GSA.

Some prototype pics, as found on http://forum.r12gs.eu .

Changed triple clamps and handle bar mount. What is the electric thing there on the left fork leg?

The switch on the right side says 'Auf' and 'Ab', which means 'Up' and 'Down'.

Some toy for the Can-Bus

You can consider the following new frills are a 'close to confirmation':

- stainless steel side covers
- more power, 105 or 110 hp not yet confirmed
- service interval display integrated
- changed tripe clamps, makes the handle bars a little further backwards and a little higher for improved comfort
- redesigned front fender and screen for improved comfort, ditto for using the foot pegs of the ADV
- optional ESA electronic suspension (the 'up' and 'down' thingy on the photo)
- Delivery to German dealership starts 1. week of September

The updated '08 engine puts out 110 hp at the clutch, as measured by several German motorcycle magazines. Here an example from MOTORRAD 1/2008:

They found the top hp sometimes varying unusually, here with the blue curve documented at 108 hp. They did measure also other results, with the worst being 105 hp. They found this being due to the activity of the knock sensor, or respectively the related FI programming. On request BMW stated this being likely more a Dynograph "Beauty Fault". Motorrad disagrees, but also says there is no negative impact feelable from the knock sensor's activity. May be likely BMW jut being careful. Even the worst case scenario "only" 105 hp is actually what their data sheet says. The already very well running incarnation of the '07 GS boxer is slightly beaten.
