10,000 km / 6,000 m Service

I paid S $ 391 / US$ 250 / Euro 190, includes

- rear brake pads changed (apr. 30 % liner material left)
- oil change with filter (Castrol 20W-50 synthetic)
- oil change, rear wheel drive

I also was informed that they needed to unmount a cross bar from my crash bars, which they charged me S$ 24 for. The crash bars are from SW-Motech, I knew that and don't mind so much the 24.

Rear drive oil is cheap and process takes a few minutes. It is service instruction from BMW from 2007. They will now change it every 10,000.

The spark plugs are unusual at that mileage.

10,000 km maintenance

Completed the 10,000 km (6000 mile, 6830 actual miles)
maintenance. Did it myself, it was rather simple, it helps
considerably that I have a lift table. Three hrs for the first time + $55
USD for lube and filter. My guess is I could do this in 2 hrs or less
next time.

Changed the engine oil (20W50 synthetic, Mobil-1) and filter.

BMW doesn't specify an interval for the GS that I can find, I do it at 3K miles (5K km).

Changed the transmission lube (75w140 syn, BMW)

Old lube looked new.

Changed the final drive lube (75w140 syn, BMW)

Instructions: http://www.r1200gs.info/howto/reardrive.html

Biggest challenge was aligning the spline shaft to the U-Joint.

Old lube was really dark.

This may be the weak point on a GS and should be done often.

I used a plastic squeeze bottle and piece of clear tubing to inject the new lube.

Adjusted the valves.

Instructions: http://www.r1200gs.info/howto/valve-adj.html

I can purchase 75W140 synthetic lube much cheaper at most suppliers
rather than use the BMW bottled stuff. I had everything else on
hand including Honda Moly-60 paste.

Previously I purchased GS specific tools:

Spark plug/coil removal tool: http://www.marcparnes.com/BMW_Plug_Tool.htm

Oil filter wrench: http://www.jesseluggage.com/whatsnew.html

Metric feeler gauges, mostly available in USA are .001 inch marked with metric equivalent.

Next to do is TBS at 4000+ rpm. The BMW maintenance computer
balances the throttlebodies at idle. I have no current complaints
but will check and balance anyway. <img style="cursor: pointer;" onmouseover="this.style.cursor='pointer'" onclick="tinyMCE.insertSmiley('wcf/images/smilies/thumbsup.png', 'thumbsup', '');" src="wcf/images/smilies/thumbsup.png" alt="" title="thumbsup" height="17" width="69" />

BMW service

Since my local dealer isn't a good place to go and the next dealer is over 200 miles - I try to do almost everything. I talked to the BMW regional service manager about any warranty issues and he said to keep all receipts and records.

On the GS, basic service is a piece of cake. Engine oil and filter, trans, and rear end can be done in short order. On my 1150 GSA, air filter is easy too. I haven't tried to do the splines- not sure how to do that.

I borrowed a mamometer to do the throttle bodies. I really like doing this my self. The more I do it and then ride it, the more I understand how this bike wants to be tuned---often slightly different that what BMW says.

I also put is a set of NGK Iridium plugs.

For the TB Sync, I do it at idle on a hot engine. Once I am happy with that, I move the RPM up to the RPM I want the motor smoothest at, i.e., about 4000 RPM. Just did this, and it makes a noticeable difference in vibration on the 1150 at 70 MPH.

Planning trip to NC mountains Labor Day and now the bike is happy! New Tourance tires, new [to me] Remus Revolution exhaust, New Rocky Mayer seat, new oil, and fresh tune up. What more could a GSA want?

I did all my 6,000 mile myself. Used Twinmax to synch throttle with a final balance at 4,000 RPM. Need to find cheaper source for filters and crush washers.... 8-)
