Farkling GS questions

Peter,
I've decided to purchase an R1200GS. I've read your reports on the VStrom Forum of how you modified and equipped your GS. A couple of thoughts and questions:

1. After looking at the luggage available, I'm thinking of following your foot steps and purchasing the Hepco Becker Junior 40 flash. My questions about this are:
a. Do you still think the H & B rack is the best starting point or should I consider a different rack? I'm thinking the H & B rack will connect the bags in the best manner and the rest can be modified to fit.
b. Any concerns with the Happy Trails muffler lowering kit or would you still go for local modifications? I'm thinking I can get a local muffler shop to lower things just fine.
c. Does lowering the muffler make access to remove the rear wheel more difficult?

2. You suggested the Fuel Injection kit made a difference. Would you do this again? I haven't contacted this company yet and am not sure how it works: intercept the ECU output or what.

3. Aeroflow windscreen with half fairing is probably my choice. My weather is not always warm. Any thoughts on this?

4. I've installed the SW-Motech engine guards on my friends GS. I was unhappy with the strap that goes below the skid plate having to be removed to change oil. I may go for the H & B bars instead.

5. I'm undecided about changing to the Wilbers/White Power suspension yet although I like the lower option. I'm curious, how did you decide 20 cm?

6. Any advice or suggestions on other farkles? I'm open to suggestions. Thanks for posting your progress.

Peter

RE: Farkling GS questions

These are quite a bunch of questions. I am new to the GS myself, but I'll try.

1.a. I did evaluate most other options available in the market. I was able to narrow down to the following choices:
- Givi racks are good as well. I found they make the cases sit on the bike leaving slightly lesser space for the passenger (extra welding works needed).
- Jesse Safari racks and bags. At the time of my purchase I felt this company was lacking service and response.
- H & B: I like these cases, and I am very happy with what was done to the racks. I would definitely take the H & B again, despite their miserable mounting bits and pieces. But I would reconsider the colour of the powder coating. Next time I would chose black, not silver as I did.

1.b. Judging from the photos the Happy Trail exhaust lowering kit seems pulling the muffler more out to the rear, which does not look really nice. As well it makes the muffler being more horizontal than I needed with the H & B luggage. Well I guess that the kit fits perfect with the HT bags. It should be easy for any workshop capable of welding stainless steel to lower the muffler. Then the result will match best with the cases.

1.c. Now there is lesser space, but still easily possible. I have no issue with it.

2. The TFI settings provide a positive difference for me. It makes the engine pulling better and even smoother - at the price of a gas mileage hit. The engine sound is audibly mellower. Essential for the GS? No! Nice to have? Yes! You should buy her first and then see how she runs. I guess I 'need' it more than you, because here the weather is always hot.

3. I can not say anything to the airflow screen. I do not know the half fairing you mention. Pls. provide a link or so. May be someone else can comment.

4. The H & B bars where tested as the second best by a German magazine (in a test field of six spill bars), which means they are not bad either. Note: The sample the magazine got was a miserable fit. I did prefer the SW-Motech because of their 25 mm tubing.

5. I needed this, because the new shocks do not cause the bike sinking into suspension as much as the OEM shocks do (after mounting the bike). The GS is 20 mm higher than the V-Strom. So I just guessed this would be a good point of orientation. 20 mm lowering came out as being spot on for me. I have the seat at high position.

Other comments: Wilbers was not too accurate with their 20 mm lowering, WP was. I was able to balance the difference out with the free height adjuster present on the WP. My decision in favour of the WP for the front is only from the reason that this shock does not alter the total front travel. The Wilbers front suspension cuts about 40 mm suspension travel. Mr. Wilbers told me their aim was to remove excessive bike movement when the bike is ridden very sharp. A GS shock absorber group test done by another German magazine confirmed this statement. I am not a sharp guy anymore, so I do not ask for sharp rides every day. Besides, I feel the function of both Wilbers and WP are very good, and compared the Wilbers comes even better crafted.

6. These are items I would buy again (besides some goodies meantioned already in this thread):
- Ilmberger rear hugger, expensive but excellent
- Fender Extender, whatever brand
- Wunderlich throttle position sensor protector is a must to me
- Wunderlich screen mounting with 20 mm adjustability is very good (depends on the screen used)
- Oil cap lockable, whatever brand
- Wunderlich steering stops (or Touratech steering stops, I guess the Touratech are somewhat better)
- Cee Baileys GS liner bags, they fit the H & B cases with some room left for a bottle or such, or original H & B liner bags
- MRA screen spoiler (depends on the screen used)
- PivotPegz II, I like them (but tey should come with a removable rubber pad)

Hope this helps.

RE: Farkling GS questions

I have the Aeroflow on my 2002 GSA and it works pretty well. I am 6'4 with short legs [30"] and need a TALL windshield. The Aeroflow helps a lot. Up to 55 mph, it is very quiet and still. At about 70-80 mph it does buffet some.

A friend has one on his 06 GS and it works equally well on it. It stops a lot of the air blast that comes over the tank. He also uses Aerostich tank-saddle bags to act as fairings for his knees and extra storage. Then he has the BMW tank bag on top.

Options I have on my 02 GSA-
1. BMW black saddle bags...got for $350 with mounts... didn't have $1200 for Jesse
2. After market tank bag. Didn't like the BMW one. It is big and roomy- problem is no partitions and I spent way too much time searching in it trying to find something. The one I have now [from Cycle GEar] has two side pockets, map pocket, rain cover pocket, and can be used on steel or plastic tanks. It also has shoulder straps to use as a shoulder bag off the bike.
3. Hella ff50 lights.
4. Aeroflow windshield
5. Large foot on side stand. The 02 leans over a little too far making mounting more difficult. I made mine from a piece of black "plastic" cutting board and drilled two holes from the top of the stand down into it. This also means I don't have to carry a sand pad.
6. Jesse top box. Don't like the looks, but it sure works well. It also has a small "glove" box underneath where I keep tools, tire kit, soft ties, and flash light.
7. Stebel horn. Couldn't take the wimpy stock one. No one heard me.
8. In process of altering a seat to fit my but.
9. Tourance tires...but next ones will be either Michelin Pilot Roads or Avon AV.
10. Wiring harness. I installed a fuse block/relay that is triggered by a ON HOT lead. It powers my ----Garmin 276c, Horn, Hella ff50, Hella Micro DE fog, Radar detector [8500], Gerbing heated jackets/gloves, Autocom Pro-7 intercom, and Ipod.
11. Touratech hand grip spoilers on top of the hand grips. Help in Winter but take off in summer.
Oil = Mobil ONE except in the rear end which is Lucas Syn. 90.

Wish List----Ohlin or Wilbers suspension. 2007 GS Adventure...with Ohlin/Wilbers.

By the way, the problem in USA now is Wilbers decided to drop Klause. NOT good.

RE: Farkling GS questions

I agree that with Klaus. But live has to go on. I was told that there will be three Wilbers distributors very very soon (in the US).

Now back to the screens. In the German boxer forum I have also read good comments about the Z-Technik screen. For riders who do not need so much side protection, the MRA Vario Touring has got praise.

Windscreens

I have also heard the Z-Technic screen is good.

I just would like to borrow one to try before laying out the $$$.

Would like to see factories offer a demo unit for the cost of shipping. If you like it, keep it. If not, return with out hassle.

Of course, shipping to Singapore might be a little steep?
