I inherited a 2007 R1200GS with approximately 3300 miles on it from a friend that passed away. I plan on doing a Prudhoe Bay to Ushuaia trip with it in about a year which should give me plenty of time to bone up on my riding on it. I've always been a Harley guy and done up to13,000 mile trips on them. The year's pre-trip planning will also give me time to take care of the logstical end of the trip itself.
My question is:
Would I be better off selling the RS (I would like to keep it for sentimental reasons) and getting a newer used R1200GSA Adventure model, or will the R1200GS do just fine with just more fuel stops along the way, keeping a couple of litres of spare fuel onboard on an exterior pannier rack?
The bigger after market add-on fuel tanks for the RS are ugly, if practical, and cost about $1600. I'd have to add crashbars, better shocks, and numerous other things to the RS also.
My RS does have the three panniers cases and sump guard on it already though.
Just need to know if it's practical to keep it or upgrade, realistically speaking. I know it would make it. but if I want to ship it on to South Africa, ect. would I be better off with the Adventure instead?
Funds are not unlimited, that's why I'm asking.
Thank-you for any info.
