Hi from Saudi Arabia

Hi everyone,

I am a South African, living in UK, working in Arabia. It's complicated, LOL !!! I am a Railway Design Engineer with the Saudi Railway Company www.sar.com.sa

I have been in Arabia 6 months and bought here a 2004 R1200GS with 86,000 kms on it, it's had a hard life and needs love and attention.

I have been riding GS' for years but have never owned one - always hired or ridden friend's bikes. In UK I have a Yamaha XTZ750 Super Tenere and I considered the GS equivalent here, and F800GS but could only get a new one and they are expensive here.

Thanks, Peter Watts, Riyadh

Welcome South African UK Saudi rider

I also bought my R1200GSA used to reduce the cost a little. I got my 2009 with 10K miles on it. One nice thing is all the accessories the first owner put on it. Low miles used bikes are the way to go. Fiscally responsible rider in Georgia, USA.

Hi Peter,

The roads are good but in the cities the driving is crazy and very dangerous. We ride on Friday mornings very early (= 'Sunday' here) but once you get out of town the roads are great. Cool in winter but 55C in Summer. Petrol costs 15US Cents a liter. I hope one day to ride this GS back to the UK, where I live. Most of the local people 'cruise' the cities on Harleys. Expats tend to ride across the country and region. Everyone gets excited when they see 3 GS's out on a ride. The people are nice. They just drive crazy and have a very high road death rate.

Ya ya I know, I've been educated its up to Allah if you die or not.

Just came back. I intended to turn right, positioned myself to the right side of the lane, signaled right, and still a car driver wanted to overtake me to the right. I am slowly getting sick of this, and if this is supposed to be the future then the future looks not exactly good. Sorry I am in a bad mood fir the next h or so.

And the landscapes? What kind of roads are you riding through? I assume a GS is just right over there.
