Quiet helmets

Here are some noise data for cross style helmets. The measurements where taken in a wind channel, on a set-up which equals riding an unfaired bike at constant 110 kph / 70 mph. This is to ensure equal testing conditions for every helmet.

dbA, with sun shield / without sun shield / subjective acoustic rating by test riders

Arai Tor XII: 91 / 89 / 3 points
Airoh S4: 91 / 89 / 3 points
BMW Enduro: 89 / 89 / 5 points
Held Takato: 90 /89 / 3 points
HJC CL-XS Vapor: 91 / 90 / 2 points
Marushin X-Moto: 92 / 90 / 2 points
Shoei Hornet DS: 88 / 87 / 5 points
Uvex Enduro: 89 / 89 / 4 points

The Schubert S1 was used as the reference helmet. It is at this moment the quietest helmet in the market. The S1 reached 85 dbA.

Of course not only noise levels were checked, but a general practice test performed. Overall test winner was the Shoei Hornet DS. To me the secret test winner was the Uvex Enduro. It reaches 90 % of the positive Shoei results at half the price! Summary of the top 3 helmets:

1. Rank: Shoei Hornet DS
19 points (max = 20 pts.)
" .... not a single weakness but it performed very well in the acoustics tests, and the ventilation also works exceptional well. Super: Suitability for those with glasses. Test winner, our overall recommendation."

2. Rank: Uvex Enduro
17 points
" ... the helmets crafting and acoustings de-classe all the lower priced helmets easily, it even closes up to the much more expensive BMW Enduro. Our price-recommendation."

3. Rank: BMW Motorrad Enduro
16 points
"... a really good hyprid helmet, which convinces us in almost every test criteria. Note: The very positive noise behaviour is partly based on a tight cut around the ears, so try before buying!

Other tested helmets: Arai Tour X2 (15 pts.), Airoh S4 (14 pts.), Held Takato (12 pts.), HJC CL-XS Vapor (11 pts.), Marushin X-Moto (10 pts.).

Thanks Peter for the heads up :D
I will report later as to my experience with the Hornet. See that there is a "under chin piece" to keep the niose and wind to a minimum I guess.
Why would this model be more expensive - material, name brand or both? TAXES X(
I should be happy, been riding with HJC open face so far.

The perfect fit of the Shoei helmets to many different head shapes seems almost unbeatable. Personally I have only experience from my Multitec. It just feels very nice and snug around the head. Another point, they have a wind tunnel. As I read only two helmet makers have one, the other one being Schuberth. If their prices needs to be so high, though?

Anyway, looking forward to your report.

helmet

I think we just need to have a press made- and press everyone's head into a "perfect" shape and say- size 7.33331. Then we could all buy one helmet and really compare notes on which one works... Wouldn't that be great!!! I wish I could wear one of the many good helmets.

My off road helmet is the Arai and on road is Arai- they are the only one I fit....in XXXL.

Till the new Shoei Multitech, I could not get a Shoei on my head. I like the fit of the Multitec- a lot, but just not willing to spend $450 dollars to try it out, so I stick with my Arai Signet GTR XXXL. But then wouldn't you know it, Arai does not make it anymore!!!! ugh....!!!!!! :(

Man i hate having to wear big stuff.. Size 14-15 boot, 54 jacket, 12 gloves XXXL helmet. Where is the shrinking machine??

I really like the Multitec. have tried them on numerous times. Love the ear pockets..that should finally make my ER6 ear phones more comfortable. The Arai is so tight a fit there, that it is hard to keep the ER6 in place while putting the helmet on. Love the flip shield- that should make wearing glasses easier. I had a small set of glasses made just to fit into the Arai. Also, when on the GSA and on fire roads it would be nice to open the face up for more air!
