Honda Cub family reaches 60 Million

Current Japan retro model 'Super Cup'

At current they make 5 million of these per year. The model which is most close to the original version is produced in Japan, the Super Cub. Yet the figure includes the other models of the family, mostly 'Innova' for the EU market (produced in Thailand), and 'Wave' for the Asian market (produced in various locations). Other names used for bikes of this family are 'Dream', 'Super Dream', and for the Indonesia production 'Supra'. These are technically not anymore really that close to the original. But they all stick to the same original idea under which the Cub was created. 'Cub' stands for 'Cheap Urban Bike', which means a small motorized bike which is cheap to buy and easy to maintain. As much as the 60 million number may be debatable with regards to what should be counted, it's still a motorcycle build in impressive figures. Why should they care too much, if you or I buy a Varadero?

Honda CZ-i 110

A more modern successor of the Wave is just launched in Thailand, the Honda CZ-i 110.

It has a 4-stroke 110 cc engine, operated by a PGM-FI (Programmed Fuel Injection), Honda’s patented technology and now in its 3rd generation. The fuel consumption is said to be only 1.7 l / 100 km = 138 mpg. This would mean a fuel efficiency of 57 km / l, or a 18% fuel saving over the previous 100 cc model, by 25% better torque, so Honda claims. More: It has the ability to use E20 fuel, and it meets Euro 6 future emission standards. Current motorcycles sold in Europe are required to comply with Euro 3 standards.

The Honda-CZ-i-110 is officially sold in Thailand since 26. July 2008 for 38,400 baht, which equals about US$ 1140 / Euro 765 / S$ 1600. That's a lot for Thais. Sales are expected to reach 8,000 units per month. On top of the normal 1 year warranty, Honda warrants 50,000 km for all parts of the fuel injection system inclusive fuel pump, throttle bodies, and injector.

Quite remarkable the latest technology is first used for a small mass model - not for their latest high-tech bike, hmmm?
